An afternoon seawatch at Sunset Beach, Northampton Co. during the approach of
Gaston from 4:30 to 5:45 was not terribly interesting - 8 Black Terns (7
ads., 1 juv.) were highlights among 321 Common, 1 Forster's, 3 Royal, and 4
Sandwich Terns. Almost all the terns were flying S in the SE winds, which were
about 25 knots at most. Winds now, at 10:30 p.m., are gusting into the 40s,
maybe
a little higher - very surprising. The storm was declared extratropical, but
it still seems to have tropical characteristics. Richmond apparently has
gotten 10 inches of rain - we've had about 1-2 inches here in Cape Charles,
mostly in the last 2 hours.
