VA-Birders
Today we observed a TRICOLORED HERON flying along the marshes on the
north shore of the York River, just above the Coleman Bridge. This is the
first i have seen here, though i gather from some sources i have that they
arent terribly uncommon. It offered a striking difference to all the Great
Blues and Great Egrets we have right now.
Also, i saw a smallish dove along a back road here in Gloucester Point
today. It looked different enough from the rest of the Mourning Doves that
i stopped and backed up to get a better look. It was small with large black
spotting on the coverts, bright reddish-pink legs, and a rather stocky
appearance. Is there a chance this is a Common Ground-Dove? Or am i just
unfamiliar with juvenile Mourning Doves?
Thanks
