Twelve participants joined me for today's walk along the Hike-Bike Trail
sponsored by Huntley Meadows Park. The data is also to be used for Ben Jesup's
survey.
Warbler numbers were fairly low, but we had 4 Black-and-white Warblers,
including a potential? breeding pair observed for the second week in a row near
the horseshoe bend along the Pond Trail. Two probable breeding Pine Warblers
were seen near the Maintenance Building, perhaps the same individuals as seen
last week. We had a handful of other warblers, including less than a dozen
Yellow-rumps. Pathetic!
Acadian Flycatchers have made their appearance, with 8 heard. Red-eyed Vireos
have almost overrun the place with a final tally of 38. Two White-eyed Vireos
were heard and seen on either side of the platform. A Blue Grosbeak was
singing from a Sweet Gum in the first meadow.
The biggest surprise of the day was the location of a male Northern Harrier
working the North Marsh. Seems such a small area for this raptor to forage.
