Hello all,
Went to Back Bay this morning (9:15 - 11:45) to try
out our brand new binoculars - Nikon 10x42 and Zhumell
10x42. We had a great time despite heavy NNE winds,
intermittent light rain, and very few species.
On the drive down to the visitor's center, we spotted
a flock of several thousand tree swallows, and saw
more individuals and smaller flocks later in the
morning.
The highlight, however, was the intermittent streams
totalling at least a thousand Baltimore orioles -
mainly females and juveniles, with a smaller number of
adult males mixed in. They were flying behind and
above the dunes, coming into the trees to rest briefly
before taking off again. As we were on the boardwalk,
they flew directly over us in groups of about 30 - 50,
some coming quite close to us. More and more groups
kept coming. It was awesome!
The strange thing about their flight was that they
were flying north! Can anyone explain this?
