I visited Kiptopeke State Park this past Saturday and stayed around the
banding station. I had a nice time talking to the folks there. Seeing an
adult Grasshopper Sparrow in the hand made my day. In the afternoon, I
drove around and looked for shorebirds in the farm fields. Saw many
Black-bellied Plovers, Semipalmated Plovers, Laughing Gulls, and Gull-billed
Terns. The field next to the Gator Tract of Mockhorn Island WMA also had a
Short-billed Dowitcher and a White Ibis. I finally saw the Eurasian
Collared-Doves, but they were not where I expected them. A pair was at the
intersection of Harmony and Magotha Landing Roads. Also saw an adult
Red-headed Woodpecker fly east, into the woods, and had a Grasshopper
Sparrow singing in the field.
Yesterday, I visited Newport News Park, but found few migrants. Most
notable birds were two female Baltimore Orioles.
I visited Craney Island last Thursday, but my message failed to post. Most
notable birds there were 8 Black Terns in the south impoundment and a
Tricolored Heron, but I was unable to get to the east side.
