We now have 38 juvenile and adult Canada Geese on the 8 acre lake in the
front yard. AND an eclipse plumage male wood duck. The wood ducks in the
wetlands in the back yard had 3 babies this spring and I only see 2 now when I
occasionally see them fly by with the adults. This may be the third that was
separated from the others by some accident. The wood duck has adopted and been
adopted by the Canadas and thinks he's one of them. Literally. He swims in
formation
with them wherever they go and when they get out of the water and eat grass,
he gets out and forages grass seed and other morsels, sometimes going 25' from
the water. Like them, he runs back to the water when challenged, not flying.
He acts just like a goose as far as habits, personality, etc. He's no more shy
of humans than the Canada's. I had no idea the adoption process would be so
encompassing. I've noticed him with them for about 3 weeks now. It will be
interesting to see what winter brings.
