The eagerly anticipated *vanguard to our Purple Martin colony arrived
shortly before 5 o' clock this evening. Unexpectedly, it was an ASY
female- in the 12 years that we have maintained the colony, a male has
always made the scene days before a female shows her pretty face.
With an unrelenting headwind screaming out of the N all day (and a
lack of airborne edibles to fuel the engine) it was apparent the trip
was extremely taxing. She made only two passes around the house before
ducking into one of the new supergourds, not to be seen again. The fact
that she wasted so little time in hunkering down makes me think she
could very well have company and we just didn't see them slip in...

*the term vanguard (more appropriate and more fun to say than "scout")
was thrown out there by a gentleman wise beyond his years- but as far
as I know, it has not been copyright protected, so I have yoinked it
and am running with it...
