Hello VA-Birders,
Today during the Fort Belvoir CBC, there was a first winter THAYER'S GULL at
the bridge over the Occoquan River (Ox Road - 123), first discovered by George
Ledec. It had a small black bill, plumage speckled with white, had the
"venetian blind" primaries, and was slightly smaller than the first winter
Herrings it stood beside.
Afterward, Kurt Gaskill, Bev Leeuwenberg and I went over to Occoquan Bay NWR
and had 3 KING RAILS (saw 1), heard an AMERICAN BITTERN, and saw several
AMERICAN WOODCOCK displays as the sky turned to black.
A fantastic end to a great day of birding!
