Here it is finally,
Thanksgiving Window Watch 2003 Report
Hello all birders! Thank-you so much for your participation and your
timely return of your forms. I greatly appreciate your many comments about your
day and realize that some of you were very disappointed in the lack of birds
this year. We never know how our feathered friends will turn out on this
particular day but it is always fun and surprising to see who comes and who
does not.
Most always some unexpected visitors show up and I , especially get the
thrill of counting many species that would be life birds for me, should I have
seen
them.
The final tally is complete and I want to list from the form, starting
with the most sighted as #1 and the least sighted as #25:
#1 â American Goldfinch -505 #13 â Purple finch
- 113
#2 â English Sparrow -503 #14 â European
Starling - 100
#3 - Mourning Dove - 406 #15 â Red-bellied
Woodpecker - 55
#4 - Dark-Eyed Junco - 381 #16 â Carolina
Wren - 54
#5 - Carolina Chickadee â 376 #17 â Hairy
Woodpecker - 34
#6 - House Finch - 367 #18 â
American Crow - 33
#7 - Northern Cardinal - 318 #19 â Chipping
Sparrow - 30
#8 - Tufted Titmouse - 234 #20 â Song
Sparrow - 27
#9 - Blue Jay - 199 #21 â
North. Mocking Bird - 22 #10â White-breasted
Nuthatch â 142 #22 â Northern flicker - 15
#11 â Downy Woodpecker â 140 #23 â Common Grackle
-
14
#12 - White-throated Sparrow â 128 #24 â Pine siskin - 8
#25 â Rufous-sided Towhee - 3
One hundred and seventy six forms were mailed out and in Virginia there
was a 72% return and in the rest of the region there was an 82% return. There
was a small return from the announcement at the VA â Bird List site on the
internet which I appreciate. Perhaps next year there will be an increase as
more
birders from all over the east coast use the computer.
Altogether, there were 27 states represented counting Virginia. The
largest flock of birds reported inside the circle came from Osceola, Iowa, 50
Goldfinch and the next largest flock seen came from Williamsburg, Virginia 42
Tundra Swan in V formation overhead.
The total number of species seen and noted was 76. That is excellent for one
hour of watching, covering so much territory. See what you can do , just from
your window?
Congratulations to you all and thank you again for your continued
interest and enthusiasm.
I am very happy that the English Sparrow was not #1 this year. The
Goldfinch was ahead by 2 birds. HOORAY!
Have a wonderful year birding and join us next Thanksgiving Day for the
2004 Thanksgiving Window Watch.
Most
sincerely and gratefully,
Susan
Wingfield, Chairman
