On Saturday (9/11) I took a few minutes to check out
migrants at Switzer Dam in northwestern Rockingham
County just off Rt 33 west. I found a very substantial
flock of mixed species that was dominated by Warblers.
Between 10:30 am and noon without moving more than
100 feet this is what I was able to identify:
Pine Warblers numerous and singing
Parula Warblers 2 and singing
American Redstarts 6, adults and 1st year
Black & White Warbler 1
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1
Nashville Warbler 1
Wilsons Warbler 1, adult male
Chestnut-sided Warblers 4, adults and 1st year
Magnolia Warbler 1 1st year
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 adult male
Black-throated Green Warblers numerous adults & 1st
year
Blackburnian Warbler 1 adult male
Yellow-rumped Warblers 2 1st year
Bay-breasted Warbler 1 1st year
Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1 1st year male
Black capped Chickadees
Scarlet Tanagers 2 1st year
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch 2
American Goldfinch numerous adults & 1st year
Indigo Buntings 4, 1st year
Field Sparrow 1
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds 6
Hairy Woodpecker 1
Red-eyed Vireo 3
Blue Headed Vireo 1 1st year
Notes: There were many Warblers I couldnt identify so
its hard to tell just how many species were present.
I know that some of the other non warbler species
werent necessarily traveling with the flock but they
were present none the less. I was surprised at the
number of Warblers that feeding just a couple of feet
off the ground. It was a clear sunny day with little
breeze. I watched the Wilsons Warbler for several
minutes feeding in a small shrub about a foot off the
ground 15 feet in front of me. I was also surprised by
the number of adult male warblers that were present,
for a few moments it was almost like spring birding.
