My ornithology class visited the park this
morning from about 6:45 to about 7:30. The
flycatchers gave us a good lesson on the
differences in ecological niches of birds that
eat the same general kind of food; willow
flycatcher, phoebe, kingbird, and crested
flycatcher were all visible at the same time from
the boardwalk in slightly different habitats.(We
later had two more species-- wood pewee and
acadian flycatcher--in the woods near the W&OD
bike trail off of Hunter Mill Rd.)At Sunset
Valley we also heard the Orchard Oriole mentioned
by Andy Rabin yesterday and saw a beautiful male
Baltimore Oriole. A pair of green herons was
skulking about near the boardwalk and we had
great views of their brilliant orange legs. We
did not see or hear the yellow warbler or spotted
sandpiper that Andy saw yesterday. Tree swallows
were also flying around over the pond, towhees
and catbirds were singing and sitting out in the
open, and 4 intensely-yellow male goldfinches
were chasing one female.
All the best
Fred
