Hello VA-Birders,
Work has prevented me from birding much over the past several days but I was
able to briefly visit Sunrise Valley Park in Reston this morning. There was
not Bittern that I noticed (but could easily have been there hiding, of course)
but I did notice a few interesting birds, including two Field Sparrows, two
brightly-colored Yellow-rumped Warblers, and three Tree Swallows.
Finally, while walking through the grassy area at the north end of the Park, I
was nearly given a heart attack by an American Woodcock that waited until I was
3 feet away before flushing. It then landed not far from me and just stared
back at me and froze, overconfident in its camouflage. It was the best view
I've ever had of one of these guys, and appreciated it after I regained my
senses!
