The snowfall at our home in extreme southwestern Loudoun County was
about 13 inches and had stopped by 11 AM. Feeder visitors were as
follows:
Carolina chickadees- 3-5
Tufted titmice- 2
Carolina wrens- 2
Am goldfinches- 6-8
Song sparrows- 4-5
Wt sparrows- 6
House finches- 5
Downy woodpecker- 2
Rb woodpecker- 2
Bluejays- 4-5
Mourning doves- 8-10
Northern cardinals- up to 25
Dark-eyed juncos- over 50
House sparrow- single male
Wbnuthatches- 2
The first ever yard Am tree sparrow showed at around 9:30 and stayed for
an hour.
At about 2 PM, a female purple finch visited.
What appeared to be a male adult Cooper's hawk kept watch behind the
feeders for about 2 hours; it has a preferred perch and we watched it
through our spootting scope
between its forays into the feeding areas.
The two rb nuthatches that had been at the feeders since late August or
early Sept seem to have departed.
Black and turkey vultures overhead as well as rs hawks. Am crows calling
and flying over. Barred owls hollerin and hootin from patches of white
pine next to the house.
