To take a sanity break from work, I took my lunch to Conway Robinson State
Forest near Gainesville, Prince William County to look for birds. The first
bird I heard when I got out of the car was a calling summer tanager, a rare
nesting species here in the northern Piedmont. I was able to find a female
carrying food, indicating that she probably has a nest with young somewhere
nearby. Other birds were more expected: scarlet tanager, wood thrush,
red-eyed vireo, ovenbird, yellow-billed cuckoo (I've seen - or heard - A LOT of
cuckoos this year!).
Good birding.
