While birding part of my local patch yesterday (2/16), a second-year Bald
Eagle dawdled over. Had good views of it for a couple of minutes. It eyed one
of our little ponds but did not find anything to descend for. Plumage almost
identical to that shown in Sibley for second year bird. [We have had Bald
Eagles before, but usually flying high on their way somewhere else. This is
the first I have seen taking a low-level active interest.]
Location: 'garden plots' off Glen Park Road, to west of Accotink Creek, just
north of Braddock Road. All this in Annandale, a NOVA suburb. Bird was
heading due west.
Also seen in local patch that day: Hooded Merganser, Hermit Thrush, Cedar
Waxwings, Fox Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow and group of female Red-winged
Blackbirds, as well as the 'usual suspects'. From two mounds of downy
feathers near my feeders, I presume we were recently visited by an accipiter.
