[va-bird] Stumpy Lake in Virginia Beach

Birders,
Tom and I went to Stumpy Lake this afternoon (after yard work...ugg) in hope
of seeing some of the reported migrating warblers filtering into Virginia.
While we didn't see any MIGRATING warblers we still enjoyed lots of birds at
Stumpy. Warblers seen: Yellow-rumped, Pine (defending territory) and Palm. The
woodpeckers were very active with excavating. We observed: Pileated, Downy,
Red-bellied and Flicker. Stumpy Lake has put up several Bluebird boxes between
the
entry/exit roads and lake and YES we did see a Bluebird...not in the box...but
we only stayed about an hour. Birdsong filled the air...mostly Goldfinch. I
can't say when I have ever heard so many singing!
Missing that we expected were: BG Gnatcatchers & Tree Swallows. As I
mentioned we only stayed an hour and never even made it down by the clubhouse
but
observed 28 species. Next time we will get an earlier start and let the weeds
in
the yard continue to grow!
