Hello VAbirders,
Did anyone else have a bunch of birdees pay them a visit this morning due
to the storm last night?
Quite a few were "grounded" here this morning and even though the misty fog
made seeing them difficult they were singing so much that whenever one
would fly you could follow it by its song. As the fog burned off I could
see them better and got a chuckle out of watching a male Scarlet Tanager
sing and eat at the same time.
Hummer report: in April we had 2 hummers go thru, 1 each, male and
female. Presently we have a female who seems to be settling in to
nest. Every season since we've been watching hums seriously, started circa
'95, we've had a nesting female. I always call her Petunia, don't ask me
why. So it looks like Petunia might be here, for she's standing picket
atop what's left of our fallen Redbud tree, guarding several of our 5
humfeeders. She makes good use of the Coral honeysuckle, Lonicera
sempervirens, which has started blooming this week.
Also, we've had a minimum of 4 male Blackpoll warblers thru here in the
last few days. That seems early to me.

Yellow warbler
N. Parula - 5+
Wood thrush - 3+
RCKinglet - still????????
YRumped warbler - 25? 30?
Red-eyed Vireo - 3+
Black-throated Green warbler- 2+
Black&White warbler
Scarlet Tanager - this is the FIFTH Scarlet Tanager we've had this
season.....all of them have been males.
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - possible, only had a quick look as it took to the
wing from an oak tree and flew over me.
