After birding Thompson WMA and Loudoun Co, I stopped by the Hwy 7 bridges over
the Shenandoah to check on Cliff Swallow nests.
Compared to the 40 Occupied ones I found on 5/11, there were only 65 today.
This was a bit surprising being that the Hwy 50 bridge
colony had increased from 140 to approx. 200 when I checked on Thursday night.
I was expecting more.
Most interesting were 2 old/unused nests that were occupied by "Squatters".
One partially open-top one had a House Sparrow (not too surprising). The other
one, which was totally open from the front held a
sleeping/clinging Little Brown Bat. That's what I call recycling! After all,
in the Wild Kingdom, opportunists abound!
