We had our first Indigo Bunting at our house near Charlottesville
today. Another member of our bird club saw one in Albemarle county at
least 10 days ago-very early indeed. Weve had Blue-headed Vireo and two
Prairie Warblers here today as well. The Wood Ducks are regular visitors
to our pond again. While I was sitting motionless with binocs watching
two resplendent males 30 yards away a Tufted Titmouse landed briefly on
my shoulder, startling both of us. Last weekend I saw here the first
and most likely the last Red-breasted Nuthatch this winter. A
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was also busy inspecting holes previously
drilled.
A walk on the private Quillens farm in Augusta County this morning
turned up some Spotted Sandpipers, a Red-headed Woodpecker and a Merlin
among other species for a dozen members of the Monticello Bird Club.
John Zimmerman reported seeing a Kentucky Warbler and a Hooded Warbler
at Mint Springs park near Crozet yesterday.
For those who enjoy birding farther afield there is an active nest
of magnificent and rare Harpy Eagles with the chick visible now that is
reasonably accessible in the Darien Province of Panama. If you are
interested in a short tour May 10-15 to view the Harpy and other lowland
