This past holiday weekend I was able to get in two days of birding in
Southside VA near Emporia. Along the Meherrin River several areas are being
logged out. The real downside to this is that replanting, if any, is
typically limited to pine. These forested areas in the swampy river bottom
are home to many species.
Links to a few birds below. Some of the highlights during the two day visit
included
Anhinga - adult male actively performing courting display for over 3 hours!
Mississippi Kite - presumably same adult pair that nested last year have
returned and using same nest
Acadian Flycatcher
Eastern Wood Peewee
Red-headed Woodpecker
Prothonotary Warbler
Louisiana Waterthrush - at least 4 in one small area
Northern Parula
Prairie Warbler
Yellow-breasted Chat
Yellow-throated Vireo
White-eyed Vireo
Summer Tanager - several adult males pursuing females
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - recent fledglings flying around with adults
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Bobwhite
Wild Turkey
Prothonotary Warbler
