On Saturday, we spent most of the day searching for Mississippi Kites in
Greensville & Southampton counties. We covered all roads bordered by I95 on the
west, Hwy 58 on the north, the NC border on the south, and as far east as
Branchville (plus a number of roads NE of there in the early AM).
In spite of all that coverage, the only birds we found were the ones that Todd
and Sue found last week. We saw a total of 5 birds ( 2 of which may have been
the same birds seen twice a few miles away, later in the day). All told, we may
have seen only 3 separate birds. All of these were near the Meherrin River
bridge on Low Ground Rd.
Although we were somewhat disappointed by the small numbers (compared to the
high counts found last year), the lack of other birds could be explained by the
cool weather on Saturday. The only other bird of note was a single Dickcissel,
although again, we had expected more. Also, a good number of Red-shouldered &
Red-tailed Hawks in the area.
Good Luck to anyone else chasing these wonderful critters. It's certainly worth
the effort!
