In search of belted kingfisher nests for a research project I
canoed the South River and South Fork Shenandoah from Crimora
to Island Ford with students (May 12-13), and saw some nice
birds (and almost 10 kingfisher nests). Highlights were:
bald eagle (1 adult, feeding on carp)
merlin (1, presumably a late migrant)
solitary sandpiper (35+)
spotted sandpiper (impressive numbers, at least 70 birds)
Common merganser (2 females together, non-breeders?)
Prothonotary warbler (1 singing male)
