I was by Manassas today and stopped by the ponds by the 234 bypass on 28.
Pretty much the same birds were there with the addition of one black duck,
one DC Cormorant and 2 Killdeers doing their teamwork display. I drove down
Pennsylvania Drive between Burger King and McDonalds to its end(about 3
blocks) and turned left on Carolina St to follow the drainage of the ponds.
At the end of Carolina St you have to turn left or right. OR you can go
straight across onto a small gravel rd. that leads to the final pond of the
bypass series, a small waterfall, and the stream all the overflow goes into.
This is a very birdy area. There are standing hardwood wetlands, mature
woods, including a tremendous willow oak, mixed woods edging leading to a nice
walkable stream, and open weedy landleading back toward the ponds. I saw
about 30 juncos and 30 song sparrows driving in. I saw what appeared to be an
escaped cage finch but as I got closer(eventually within 10 ft.) I saw it was
a partially albino Junco. Its head was 90% white. I scared 3 screech owls out
of a 15 ft cedar tree. They flew into another cedar tree about 20 ft away.
Got a nice long look at them.There were 4 yellow rumped warblers in the low
trees. A woodcock went airborn about 10 ft away-close enough to see its eyes.
It would be pretty easy to spend1-1 1/2 hrs there to see it all and it
appears to be a public access area as long as you stay physically out of the
ponds. 2 pr. of American Kestrels appear to be mating up and using the
Kestrel nesting boxes along hwy28 south of Manassas. A long time birder
friend from the Nokesville area stopped by my business and told me there were
barn owls in the old barn on private property just off Hwy 28 by Catlett. I
went over this am and indeed they are and appear to be nesting. I could tell
they have been using this barn for some time.
The mystery bird(possible flycatcher) that appeared in my back yard
disappeared the next morning. Possibly because the weather changed and the
rain came down. I waited several days to be sure but haven't seen it since.
Someone suggested it might have been a blue-headed vereo. I looked in 5
different guides(Arthur Bent,Sibleys, Golden, National Geographic, Audubon)
and listened to Stokes song recordings and it could be. That would fit the
timing better. The posture was fairly upright but that could fit. Sitting
almost on the top of the tree and air gleaning insects-I don't know. Maybe.
Thanks for the input from those who did.
