The veterinary staff of the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro has asked
me to help locate a release site for an injured and now recovering Sora. The
rail was found in Augusta County on or about May 11 and is soon fit for
release. I suspect that transient Soras have already migrated through and are
on or near their breeding grounds by now. As far as I know, Virginia is out of
this species' breeding range with Pennsylvania the closest state wher it might
breed. Does anyone know of any locations near Virginia where this species is
known or suspected to be a breeder? If anyone is planning on a car trip to Pa,
Ohio or Saskatchewan next week and willing to transport the little rail to a
marsh there, let me know. I guess we could just release the bird locally and
hope it continues on its migratory path. Please reply off line if you can help.
Thanks,
John Spahr
