[va-bird] Some light Middle Peninsula birding, 17 June 2002

Greetings...

One of the non-birding parts of my life (some call it work) brought me to a
few counties that I don't get to spend much time in. Picking a few spots to
bird along the way, I was able to get out of the car in Essex (very different
from the Essex County I grew up in...), King and Queen, and King William.

Nothing terribly unusual, however there were a few species worth noting.

In Essex County, from the south side of the US 360 bridge across the
Rappahannock at Tappahannock, there were:

DC Cormorant, 1 immature.
Ruddy Ducks, 4, three drakes in high breeding plumage and a hen.
Bald Eagle, 1.
Laughing Gulls, 15, five adults.
Ring-billed Gulls, 3 first summer birds.
Great Black-backed Gulls, 2 first summer birds.
Royal Terns, 39, all banded, all adults.
Purple Martin, 1.

In King and Queen County, from a few locations:

Northern Bobwhite, 2.
Cliff Swallow, 8, four nests.
Summer Tanager, maybe 8 of them.

The Cliff Swallow nests were on the Route 629 bridge over the Mattaponi, just
south of Walkerton. There was an additional nest on the King William County
side, a total of five nests.

Cheers...

Todd
