A Snowy Owl was seen today on the beach at Chincoteague about a half-mile or
less south of the old Coast Guard Station, which is in the Off-Road Vehicle
Zone south of the last parking lot (southernmost lot) south of Tom's Cove
visitor center. Teta Kain passed on the word of this bird, which was found on
the
Christmas Bird Count.
I spent yesterday afternoon and this afternoon looking for the Northern
Lapwing reported as recently as last Friday around Mackay Island, NC. No luck
from
Pungo to Creeds to Mackay Island to Knotts Island, though I was impressed at
the array of birds in the area, especially in North Carolina. Highlights of
the Back Bay CBC included Le Conte's Sparrow, King Rail, American Bittern,
Orange-crowned Warbler, and Sedge Wren.
There may be a report of ANOTHER Northern Lapwing from the Northern Neck of
Virginia; this report was second-hand, and details suggested that it was
correct. It was only seen last Friday. When more is known about the location,
etc., of this sighting, I'll ask those with more knowledge to post it here.
Happy CBCs,
Ned Brinkley
