[va-bird] Re: Snow, Warblers, Highland Co

Hello VA birders,

I had the great pleasure of birding in Highland county today and for the
first time ever seeing Warblers all around while it was snowing. This was not
only a first for me but it also synched a bet I made with my wife. As you
may recall we had some incredibly warm days in late Feb or early March.
Anyway we had just bought xc skis and we couldn't use them because of the
unseasonably warm weather 3 weekends in a row. Anyway I jokingly bet her that
the way things are going with Global Warming destablilizing our weather and
climate etc, that it would be snowing while I was out searching for
Warblers in May. It helped tons that I was in Highland Co and furthermore up
on top of Paddy knob where apparently the Mourning Warblers had the good
sense not to be. Perhaps it snows there every May I don't know. This isn't
meant to be a scientific observation.............. just a tongue in cheek
sort of observation.
Well I did see some good birds today. Highlights included:

-Least Flycatchers at rt 625( Lifer). Bird seen doing its Che-bek Song in
tall Sycamores near "end of State Maintenance sign. Also seen further down
this road was a Northern Waterthrush.
- Golden-winged Warblers along 640 near West Va /Va boundary. Also seen in
same vicinity were :Chats, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Common Yellowthroats,
Redstarts, and Yellow Warblers, Rose-breasted Grossbeaks, Scarlett Tanagers,
Bobolinks. Ravens, Red-tail hawk.
Locust Springs:
- Blackburnians, Solitary Vireos, Magnolias, Black-throated Greens, YB
Cuckoos? (heard only) ,

Paddy knob:
Chestnut S., lots of Blue-headed Vireos ( the birds at Locust Springs were
out of time phase) , Magnolia, Ovenbirds, Black-throated Greens, Am-Redstart,
another Empid which looked very simular to the Least seen earlier but this
guy wasn't vocalizing , and 1 Wild Turkey.

Thats all,

William Leigh
