Hello, birders.
I visited Sky Meadows SP in Fauquier County, Va.,
yesterday. Temp. climbed from 56 degrees F around 8AM
to the low 60s by the early afternoon. The birding
was generally slow. I hiked from the contact station
to the Visitor's Center to the Gap Run and Snowden
Trails. I also checked out the fishing pond along
Rte. 17.
I saw 7 species of sparrow, including 1 Vesper at the
corner of the entrance road (Edmonds Lane) and Rte.
17. It was feeding on the lawn. There were 2 Fox
Sparrows in a sparrow flock at the beginning of the
Snowden Trail. Tree Swallows are common now along
Edmonds Lane as well as at the fishing pond. A pair
of Am. Kestrels are hanging out together near the
Visitor's Center.
And the ever present Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen
today, as well. I saw 1 in their usual location in
the Walnut Grove near the contact station, as well as
1 near the Visitor's Center, without much effort.
