Hello, birders.
I birded the Bridal Trail, from the parking lot to the
pipeline cut and back, at Sky Meadows SP in Fauquier
Co. on Saturday, April 26. The weather wasn't the
greatest, with some mist off and on but at least the
showers held off until I was ready to leave the park.
There was a lot of wildlife seen, both avian and
non-avian. Highlights were a flyover Great Egret and
a male Wild Turkey. The egret sighting was the first
ever for me in the spring and it was only the second
time I've seen turkey in the park in 4 years of
surveying. Some other sightings are below. Many of
these are first of the year birds for me in No.
Virginia.
No. Harrier - 1 beautiful male
Red-headed Woodpecker - Near beginning of the trail.
Gr.-crst. Flycatcher
E. Kingbird
R.c. Kinglet
Wood Thrush - Common. I saw and heard 13 of these
little guys.
B. Thrasher - 11
Yellow Warbler
Yel.-rumped Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Ovenbird
Com. Yellowthroat
Sc. Tanager
Grasshopper Sparrow
R.b. Grosbeak
E. Meadowlark - Common and vocal.
Also I came upon an Eastern Box Turtle, a Red-spotted
Newt and a Red Fox, among other things. I've only
seen one butterfly at the park this year because of
the cool and rainy spring weather. It was a Cabbage
White, seen a couple of weeks ago. Flowers are really
blooming now. Lots of Jack-in-the-pulpit in a low
spot in the woods.
