Hello, birders.
During a mild but windy bird survey at Sky Meadows SP
in Fauquier County today, I saw and heard about 10
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS in the field where the group
campground is located. These birds were feeding on
the ground in the tall grass, mixed in with a couple
of Field, about 6 Song and a Swamp Sparrow. I also
saw Junco, White-throated and 1 FOX SPARROW at the
park.
Two flocks of blackbirds flew overhead, with Grackle
predominating. Spring is coming! I could pick out
Cowbirds but didn't necessarily see any Red-wingeds.
I did hear a Red-winged near the contact station.
I saw or heard all the woodpeckers except Sapsucker.
The aggressive Red-headeds were chasing the
Red-bellieds.
Turkey Vultures, Kestrels and Red-tails were present.
Bald Eagle and Black Vulture were seen just outside
the park. The part of the park that I surveyed was a
swath of land from the pond west of the entrance road,
to the contact station, through the Walnut Grove (open
woods where the Red-headeds occur) and fields to the
fishing pond along Rte. 17.
I stopped at North Fork Wetlands in western Prince
William Co. on the way home. Common waterfowl,
raptors and gulls were present there.
