Hello, birders.
It was slow birding on this warm, beautiful fall day
at Sky Meadows. So nice to be outside on a day such
as this.
I searched for the Shrike in the vicinity of the
fishing pond but I couldn't locate it. It could still
be in the area, but who knows? The most noteworthy
bird of the day was a drumming RUFFED GROUSE, heard on
the upper North Ridge Trail. I've still never
actually SEEN a Ruffed Grouse here in the
Mid-Atlantic. Where I have heard them, it's been too
dense to see through the underbrush. The Visitor
Center area held a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER this morning.
I did not bird the Walnut Grove today. A good
variety of sparrows are still around, and I didn't
even go to any really good sparrow patches today.
The leaves, so green last weekend, are now a little
past peek at the park but still very colorful. I'm
told the peek was Wed. and Thurs.
