Today was one of two days this month that I had time
to visit Sky Meadows for the bird survey. I didn't
look forward to going because of the weather forecast.
Conditions were crummy during the first 1 1/2 or 2
hrs. of my visit, temps were in the low 40s with a
strong NNW wind and steady rain. It is tough to bird
on such a day, esp. for an eyeglass wearer like me.
But during mid-morning the rain stopped, never to
resume for the rest of my hike. The rest of my walk
was much more comfortable. Birding on the W side of
the park produced several sparrow flocks, of which
JUNCOES were the most abundant species. My first FOX
SPARROWS of the fall fed with others on the woodland
floor, scratching in the leaves. Songbirds were
mostly confined to the sheltered areas out of the wind
today. I accidentally flushed an AMERICAN WOODCOCK
and 5 or 6 WILD TURKEYS in the woods near the main
campground. Only 1 hawk, a RED-TAILED flying through
the woods, no vultures.
