Sky Meadows continues to host at least one LOGGERHEAD
SHRIKE. It was unusually wary. Didn't see the bird
go to or from any nest but it could have done so as it
was not in my view the whole time.
I heard 2 NORTHERN BOBWHITE. One was in the Walnut
Grove and one was near the entrance road pond. I was
unsuccessful when I tried to get one to answer to my
whistle.
I found several migrant warblers near the contact
station - NASHVILLE, YELLOW-RUMPED, PRAIRIE and
BLACKPOLL. I don't think I've ever seen a Prairie
Warbler at the park before.
The eastern of the two farm ponds held a few
shorebirds: 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER
and 5 KILLDEER. Some of the Killdeer behaved
aggressively toward the Leasts, displacing and chasing
them from favored feeding areas. A yellowlegs was
reported in one of the farm ponds by one of the park
staff. He felt it was a LESSER but when I visited the
ponds it was gone. The peeps were too far away to ID
from behind the fence so I had to crawl to the pond,
using a rise of land and some weeds as cover so as not
to frighten the Mallard pair which I feared would make
a fuss and scare the shorebirds. That's probably how
I got the 4 ticks I found on myself later on.
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER count was 7. They were all
in the Walnut Grove.
A flock of 35 AM. GOLDFINCHES were chattering away on
the edge of the Walnut Grove. Later they fed on
dandelion seeds nearby. They'd mostly fly away when a
car passed by but would return a minute later.
I found a WOOD THRUSH nest in a White Oak along the
road in the Walnut Grove. The female had so many
spots in the center of her breast that it appeared to
create a blotch!
