Hello, birders.
Got a really late start today but the birding was
still OK. Mostly cloudy, thundershower in early
afternoon. I surveyed from the Visitor Center to the
Appalachian Trail. Also walked part of the Meadow and
Bridle trails to check on the shrikes. Some
observations:
AM. KESTREL, 1 adult female with 4 fledged young near
Visitor Center. I heard they fledged about a week
ago.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
WILLOW FLYCATCHER, Meadow Trail
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, 1. Not sure if they are still
nesting/attempting to nest or what. In my visits here
I've never seen any fledglings. I've never been able
to see into the nest very well so I don't even know if
eggs were ever laid. Nest seems unkempt now. The
bird I saw today was in the vicinity of the nest
(Meadow Trail area).
warblers - YELLOW, CERULEAN, REDSTART (more than
usual), KENTUCKY, COM. YELLOWTHROAT, HOODED
S. Baron
Fairfax, Va.
