Hello, birders.
Walked from Visitor Center to App. Trail by way of
South Ridge and North Ridge Trails on this beautiful
day. Highlights below:
-BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 1
First for me here in the summer. Soaring above
intersection of So. Ridge and No. Ridge Trails.
-RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
2 near contact station but I didn't search for long.
Also 1 near Visitor Center, 1 at pond along Gap Run
Trail and 1 at lower North Ridge Trail field. Not
usual at latter 2 locations.
-HOODED WARBLER, 2
South Ridge Trail (over halfway up mtn.); upper No.
Ridge Trail. Scarce in this park, unlike at nearby
Thompson WMA
-KENTUCKY WARBLER, 2
So. Ridge Trail (over halfway up); intersection of
So. Ridge and No. Ridge Trails.
-YELLOW-BR. CHAT
1 near So. Ridge Tr., just before entering woods at
top of field
I saw a male Baltimore Oriole that had a broken left
wing. He couldn't fly but was easily hopping from
branch to branch, feeding near eye level. Great looks
at the poor fellow. I was wondering why he was so low
and close at first until I saw the wing. Kathy, the
park ranger/interpreter, reported a male R.t.
Hummingbird that appeared to have an injured wing as
well.
For some reason, no Cerulean Warblers today, except
for maybe 1 distant singer.
Lots of butterflies, esp. Cabbage White. Many
butterflies were nectaring on milkweed.
