Bruce Jones of Rappahannock Co. joined me on this
windy day for my bird survey at Sky Meadows. We
counted 55 RING-BILLED GULLS flying N in mid morning,
presumably migrants. I've never seen them here
outside of the spring. We saw 18 more Ring-bills N of
the park later on. 8 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were
scattered throughout the Walnut Grove w/ one more near
the Vis. Center. We had wonderful looks as they fed,
rested and chased each other. The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
was present on the E side of the park. Many common
songbirds were scarce or absent today. About 1 in. of
hard snow remains on the ground in many areas of the
park. Some nice birds w/ good company.
