Thanks to George Harris's post of Feb. 27, 2004, we traveled to Culpeper County
on Saturday, February 28 and found two short-eared owls at the Horseshoe Farm,
Route 614, Rapidan, Virginia. We did not see as many owls, probably due to the
active movements of our 7-yr-old son as we stood outside the car. We also saw
No. Harriers, heard and saw singing Red-wing Blackbirds and Killdeer.
We did not see owls at the second location described in the Harris's email, but
the habitat certainly looked good. There were at least 5 No. Harriers hunting
in a field on the right just as Rt. 647 turns to gravel, about 1/2 mile before
the field where the Harris's found the owls the day before.
I was startled as I followed one of the owls at the Horseshoe Farm entrance
road to find a parachutist in the same binocular field. There is a sky-diving
club at the nearby Orange Airport and apparently they continue to jump until
the sun sets. Distracted me from the owl, but delighted our son.
