We checked again tonight on the SEOWs north of Winchester. When we got there,
we watched 4 Harriers cruise the same fields that the owls use.
At about 6:15, the Harriers went down and we noted the first owl coming in high
from the NE. It was followed by another 4, all flying in from a high altitude
above the horizon. Eventually, there were at least 8 SEOWs coming in on that
same line (although, we never did see more than 4 in the air at any given
time). Most kept flying south along the same line but a few stuck around in our
field.
All in all, I believe there may be 8-10 or more in the area. I'm more
interested now in learning where they spend the day.
Total list for that small area from 5:00-6:30:
Harrier - 4 (1 Gray Ghost)
Red-tailed Hawk - 7
Kestrel - 2
Short-eared owl - 8+?
Yet again, we did not find the RLHA that had been in the area a few weeks ago.
