Birders,
This evening between 5:45 PM and 6:15 PM, Rosemarie and I saw ten
Short-eared Owls.
Rt. 614 - Rapidan , at Horseshoe Farm - seven. Four of the owls were
perched on roadside fence posts - one about 15 feet away. With 10x
binoculars it looked like an Eagle Owl! More than seven owls are
probably here but we departed for other possible owl sites before we
checked some areas of the farm.
Rt. 647 - Three owls were perched on hay rolls about a mile from the
Rapidan Berry Farm (Rt. 615).
A dark-phased Red-tail Hawk was at the Berry Farm and two Northern
Harriers were in the field adjacent to the Berry Farm. One
Rough-legged Hawk was observed between Orange and Rapidan on Route 615.
Happy birding,
George Harris
Orange County
