Hello,
Betty Kilgore, Sonia Santa Anna, and I had great looks at a Short-eared
Owl late this afternoon at Bull Run Post Office Road, Fairfax Co. We first
saw the owl about 8 or 9 minutes before 6:00 pm, when it flew from left to
right across the field and then across the drive and disappeared behind some
cedar trees. Several minutes later an owl appeared again in the field on the
left. By then, several more people had arrived, and I think everyone had
great looks at the bird as it flew by at close range.
For those who may not be familiar with this site, Bull Run P.O. Road
intersects with U.S. Route 29 just east of Manassas Battlefield. Go north
about 3 miles on BRPO Road until you see the posted signs on the right.
Watch for the entrance which has just enough room for 2 or 3 cars to pull off
the road. Be sure to observe the no tresspassing signs; if the owl appears,
it can be seen from the entrance.
