Hello, birders.
I arrived at the SHORT-EARED OWL field along Rte. 624 in No. Fauquier Co.
before sunrise. I printed the directions from Val Kitchens late December post
and they worked very well. Soon after I arrived, I saw one or maybe two owls.
This was about 6:50am. The owl perched for a minute but was otherwise very
actively flying low over the field - twisting, turning, rising, falling. After
sunrise I saw at least 2 NO. HARRIERS.and lots of songbirds, including a few
singing WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. I think the Harriers were the first ones that
I've seen in a few months. Thanks to Todd Day for finding this spot.
Walks along the Gap Run Trail and Snowden Trail at Sky Meadows SP afterward
produced the usual common birds there, including RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS near
the Visitor Center. Mild day - in the early afternoon it was 63 degrees.
