Tom Saunders and I went out this afternoon to look at wet fields between
Capeville and Simpkins in southern Northampton County. Lots of adult birds
(only
a very few juv. Lesser Yellowlegs), all enjoyable to watch. Our list was as
follows (mostly estimates):
Pectoral Sandpiper 95
Lesser Yellowlegs 80
Greater Yellowlegs 35-40
Stilt Sandpiper 12
White-rumped Sandpiper 5
Semipalmated Sandpiper 2
Western Sandpiper 2
Black-bellied Plover 20
Semipalmated Plover 130
Killdeer 35
Ruddy Turnstone 3
Sanderling 1
Short-billed Dowitcher 25 (a few Henderson's among them)
There was also possibly an adult Baird's Sandpiper, but it breezed up and the
bird was really a little too distant for certainty. Most of the other birds
were very close. Steve Hairfield saw five Whimbrel in a field up by
Nassawadox today as well. Most of the fields have Laughing Gulls, with a few
Forster's
Terns and Glossy Ibis around too. Hopefully, we'll have a few fields that
stay wet in weeks to come - godwits, Buff-breasted Sandpipers, American
Golden-Plovers, etc. have yet to be reported this fall in the county's fields.
