[va-bird] Shorebirds at Hunting Creek, Frfx Co, 8/28/02

VA BIRDers,

Its raining! Incredible! A nice rain - slow & somewhat steady; a good soak
into the earth. So I obviously thought that it may bring a few new birds to
the mudflats at Hunting Creek. And, yes, a few new ones were about, but many
individuals of the past couple of weeks are also still present, too, as some
numbers are similar to last week.

The most interesting bird is a HY Baird's Sandpiper which may have arrived in
conjunction with the recently arrived ten White-rumped Sandpipers (the latter
species has been absent for 10 days or so). The Red Knot is still about as
well as the 4 Wilson's Phalaropes. I also see that a few more Sanderlings
arrived. Additionally, there was a suspicious dowitcher which I hope to
study more tomorrow in better light (today's birds were seen in drizzle at
about 6 pm).

Here is some numerical estimates of the shorebirds seen late this afternoon:

Semipalmated Sandpiper 1
Killdeer 19
Greater Yellowlegs 16
Lesser Yellowlegs 157
Red Knot 1
Sanderling 5
Semipalmated Sandpiper ca. 50
Western Sandpiper 2
Least Sandpiper ca. 30
White-rumped Sandpiper 10
Baird's Sandpiper 1
Pectoral Sandpiper 29
Stilt Sandpiper 1
Short-billed Dowitcher 14
dowitcher sp. 1
Wilson's Phalarope 4 (incl. one bright HY)
