Greetings to all:
A visit to Staunton River State Park early this morning produced many
shorebirds. With rain during the week I thought that the water level may have
gone up and that the shorebirds would be closer to shore. That was not the
case the water level has dropped about another two feet exposing more mudflats
and spreading the birds further away. However, I was able to Id a few species
and the total number of shorebirds were between 300 to 400.
Seen up close were the following:
Spotted Sandpipers - 19 all together
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 together with the above Spotted Sandpipers
Pectoral Sandpipers - 19 together foraging in the short grass out on the flats
Least Sandpiper - 4
Killdeer - 30+
Other birds seen include
Bald Eagle - 4 (3-I & 1-A)
DC Corm - 6
Great Blue Heron - 25
Great Egret - 20
Caspian Tern - 1
Most of my time was spent looking for shorebirds and terns but land birds
include
GC Fly - 1
E King - 1
T Titmouse - 3
Car Chick - 2
WB Nut - 2
N Flicker - 1
RB Wood - 1
