The afternoon of May 5 proved to be a good day for warblers and others at
the Laurel Prong Trail in Shenandoah National Park (at Bootens Gap on
Skyline Drive). The following were seen: Canada W., Hooded W., Black &
White W., Solitary Vireo, Red-Eyed Vireo, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, American
Redstart (lots), Ovenbird, Juncos.
On the way to Skyline on Rt. 340 between Shenandoah and Elkton I spotted
an American Kestrel on a wire and observed it hovering over the fields on
both sides of the road.
Late in the afternoon I went to the west side of Massanutten Mountain at
New Market and was surprised to find the following in full song and
presence: Great Crested Flycatcher, Indigo Bunting, Red-Eyed Vireo,
Black-throated Green W., Yellow Rumped W.
