A scouting trip for next Sunday's ANS trip, in spite of the weather, turned out
to be a pretty good day. I tallied only 60 species,
but was still quite happy with the results.
I started at Panorama and ended at Big Meadows. Most birds were expected ones,
but I am still thrilled to see birds that normally
don't appear anywhere else this time of year.
Birds of note:
Broad-winged Hawk - 1 calling very near a possible nest that I found along the
White Oak CanyonTrail.
Blue-headed Vireo - I watched a pair slowly foraging together for 20+ minutes
and hoped they would lead me to a nest; but alas, I
lost them in the canopy (also along the White Oak CanyonTrail).
4 Ravens (which I love) - together, early in the AM (uphill from Panorama).
Only 1 White-breasted Nuthatch all day (an odd shortage?).
Winter Wren - 1 singing along the Mary's Rock Trail (for me, BEST BIRD of the
day).
Veery - a Good number along Limberlost / White Oak CanyonTrails.
Cedar Waxwing - somewhat absent, but had 2 nice flocks near Panorama.
Warblers:
Parula - 1 only
Chestnut-sided - lots
Blackburnian - 4-5
Pine - 1 only
Prairie - 1 only
Blackpoll - 1 only
Cerulean - 2
Black-and-White - numerous
Redstart - numerous
Worm-eating - 2
Ovenbird - 8-10
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1
Kentucky - 1 only
C. Yellowthroat - 1
Hooded - 10-12+
Canada - 1
Junco - many, with at least 4 singing males on territory.
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 (at the same spot I found one last year).
Junk Bird of the Day? Indigo Bunting, of course!
All-in-all, a Fun day on the mountain. Outside of the tourist traffic, it
wasn't so bad - they stop and block the road for bears,
you know! - those darned New Yorkers!! But, please excuse them (I am one
myself, at heart anyway!).
