From the other reports, this seemed to be the day for Shenandoah birding...
Karen and I were in the Hazel Mountain area; we were there mid day and
didn't expect too much, but a few things are worth sharing.
Of particular note were the numerous Hooded Warblers. There seemed to be a
Hooded on every turn on the higher end of the trails. There were also
substantial numbers of Ovenbirds as well, but they were mostly in the
valleys.
We heard an interesting burry call that we both assumed was Scarlet Tanager,
but there was a peculiar slightly-musical inflection near the end. Since we
were looking for a good excuse to rest on the uphill, we decided to just be
sure it was a Scarlet. To our surprise it was a Baltimore Oriole. In
hindsight, we should've recognized the exactly repeating phrase irrelevant
of the burry-ness. Fortunately, we did recognize the almost subtle unusual
dip in the song that gave it a little more zip at the end than any Scartlet
T song we've heard.
