VA Birders,
This morning the small immature Sharp-shinned that has been making regular
visits to my feeders was back. This time he nailed a brilliantly red male
Northern Cardinal. This makes at least 4 Cardinals within the last 5 days.
He seems to have an affinity for them, or he has possibly found that they
are easier to catch than the smaller birds.
He is one of the smallest Sharpies I have seen in the area. I believe this
contributes to his ability to catch the birds. He is better able to slip
through the shrubs than a larger bird would. He is making as many as 5 or 6
visits a day. At that rate the Cardinal population is going to suffer. Does
anyone know a way to train a Sharpie to eat just Starlings :)
