VA BIRDers,
With great sadness, I note the passing of Porter Ward, a fine "young" birder
in our Northern Virginia family. He was loved and cherished by all who knew
him. The family wants friends and family to have a chance to share stories and
celebrate Porter's life. It is at the Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna
(Fairfax County) at 171 W. Maple (the corner of 123 (Maple) and Lawyer's Road)
at 11:00 AM on Tuesday. Porter's daughter, Debby, said that if people could
not come on Tuesday, they were welcome to come on Monday between 7 and 9 PM
during the family visitation. Phone number for the funeral home is 703-930-7440.
Flowers are fine or gifts can be given to either Hospice of Northern Virginia
or The Nature Conservancy.
Debby's address, if you want to send a note, is:
Debby Ward
3017 James Street
Fairfax, VA 22031
I recall first meeting Porter during a trip to Point Lookout in Maryland
nearly 4 years ago. We had a fine time that day seeing a great many species
but
the standout of the day was spotting a Tennessee Warbler on a telephone wire on
the west side of the point. After looking at the cooperative bird through a
scope, Porter pointed out that another bird had landing on the wire a few
poles down. It was another Tennessee.
Yes, it was that sort of amazing day. Black Terns, Common Terns, Royal
Terns, Brown Pelicans, lots of Am. Redstarts, Grasshopper Sparrows...
...or scotch after a winter day on the CBBT where we saw 10,000 No. Gannets
dive off into a fish run near the southern end of the bridge... or the Brooke
CBC where we ate lunch at a table near Aquia Creek while watching a No. Harrier
across the mouth of the creek...or later setting a new record for late
December Forster's Terns on the upper Potomac...or our last birding expedition
to
Leesylvania just a few months ago reveling in the Yellow-throated Warblers
cooperatively displaying...Strong Memories. Good Memories.
Let me add that many of us will be present this coming Tuesday. If you can,
please join us and add to rememberance of Porter's life
Kurt Gaskill
let us nail these things down so that we can look upon them years hence
before the winds of the ages scatter them to the chaos.
