Hi all,
Jeff Klingel, co-owner of Appleseed Nurseries near Eastville (Northampton
County) reported seeing a Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird at less than arm's length
yesterday, feeding on Firecracker Fern (a really nice tropical plant) in his
greenhouse along Rte 13. The Voice of the Naturalist reports that Ken Bass
also
had a Selasphorus hummingbird in Nokesville earlier this week. This is a
typical time for the first migrant Selasphorus (probably most/all Rufous) to
show
up; they don't tend to linger very long at this time of year.
Tom Pendleton came by yesterday and mentioned that a White-faced Ibis
persists on the Wildlife Loop at Chincoteague, an adult in faded plumage but
with a
good wide outline of pale, whitish plumage all the way around the face, a red
eye, and pinkish legs. Numbers of shorebirds were not high on the Drive during
low tide in adjacent wetlands (high tide there is late in the afternoon now).
